What is Community College of Philadelphia known for?

The Community College of Philadelphia is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, a unit of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools.  In addition to the main campus, the college operates three regional centers.  The Northeast Regional Center is the largest of the three centers.  The Northwest Regional Center is the site of  the College’s Ophthalmic Technician Proficiency Certificate.The West Regional Center is closest to the main campus.  The college served 27,729 students during the 2017-2018 year. 

During the application process, students should submit high school transcripts or GED scores.  The college does not require international students to submit scores from English proficiency exams such as TOEFL.  However, if a student has not demonstrated English proficiency, the ESL placement test will be administered on campus.  The Accuplacer Next Generation tests are administered to determine course placement in Reading, Mathematics, and Writing.  Certain ACT or SAT scores may qualify a student to be exempt from placement testing.  Other criteria may qualify a student for exemption from the placement tests and are listed in the catalog.  Students may receive college credit by exam with either CLEP scores or scores on AP exams taken in high school. 

The nursing program awards the Associate of Applied Science Degree in Nursing, is approved by the Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing, and accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing.   A minimum GPA of 2.75 in pre-nursing coursework and scores on the Kaplan Pre-Nursing exam are required for admission to the program.  Graduates may choose to begin working immediately after completing the program or they may choose to transfer to a university to complete a bachelor’s degree.  Transfer institutions include Drexel University, Eastern University, Jefferson University, Bloomsburg University, and Excelsior College.  The school also offers courses in education for students who seek to enter the teaching field.  Associate of Arts degrees are awarded and allow students to transfer to complete a bachelor’s degree and fulfill the requirements for educator certification.  One program prepares students for teaching in the level of Birth to 4th grade.  This associate degree program gives the graduate the option of entering the workforce immediately as a childcare professional or to transfer to complete teacher preparation requirements.  A second associate’s program prepares students for teaching in the Middle Level or 4th to 8th grade.  Graduates of this program will need to transfer and complete their education before working the in the field of education.
