With its main campus and headquarters in Phoenix, Arizona, the University of Phoenix is a for-profit school that operates campuses and learning sites across the United States.  Many of its students participate in programs that are offered only online.  The university is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission. 

Admission to undergraduate programs requires a high school diploma or GED.  Some programs require additional admission criteria.  For example, to enroll in the Licensed Practical Nurse or Licensed Vocational Nurse to Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree programs, entering students must submit scores from the ATI TEAS V exam.  Students entering the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program must already hold a nursing credential or an associate degree and a current RN license.  Graduate programs require a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with a minimum GPA of 2.5.  Submission of scores from the GRE or the GMAT exams may not be required. Students enrolling in undergraduate programs may be required to take placement examinations in math and English.

The university is comprised of ten school and colleges which include the School of Business and the College of Education.  Other examples include the School of Health Services Administration and the School of Nursing along with the College of Health Professions in the healthcare field.  The College of Security and Criminal Justice provides courses at the university in addition to the College of Social Sciences.   The College of Humanities and Sciences offers additional degree programs along with the College of Information Systems and Technology.  Finally, the College of Social Sciences provides additional course options for students.  Continuing education courses and professional development courses are also offered.
