What is University of Delaware known for?

The University of Delaware is the largest university in the state.  The main campus is in Newark.  The Dover Campus is one of the four satellite campuses as is the campus in Wilmington.  A third campus lies in Georgetown and the fourth is in Lewes.  The main campus is separated into smaller campuses.  One of these, the Laird Campus has dormitories and a conference center.  The South Campus has the agricultural school.  The Delaware Technology Park is east of the Main Campus.  Seven colleges and three schools are contained within the university.  Most of the students are undergraduates and, in the fall of 2018, the student enrollment number was 24,120.  The university falls under the accreditation policies of the Middle States Commission on Higher Education.

To be admitted to the university, students must submit transcripts from their high school and take the SAT or ACT test, arranging to have the scores sent to the admission office.  In the fall of 2018, the average GPA of admitted freshmen was 3.8.  Average SAT composite score was 1275 and the ACT scores fell between 27 and 31.  For some programs, students may be required to take placement exams.  The placement test given for mathematics is the ALEKS test, which students take online before they come to campus for classes.  To be competitive for acceptance to the university, International students should have a score of 90 on the TOEFL or 6.5 on the IELTS.  There is a conditional admissions program for students who meet qualifications academically but may need more practice with English. 

Over 135 different degree programs are available for study at the university.  One program that is of interest to many students is the Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing program.  Students enter the program as freshmen.  Completion of the program results in becoming a registered nurse and eligibility to enter graduate degree programs in nursing.  The university offers a Doctor of Nursing Practice degree and a PhD in Nursing Science.  The School of Education is also of interest to many students.  There is a bachelor’s degree program in Elementary Education that leads to certification and allows students to prepare for two specialty areas.  Part of the course work involves preparation for taking the Praxis tests required for certification.
