What is University of Connecticut known for?

The University of Connecticut is a public research university.  The main campus is in Storrs.  The Avery Point Campus is in Groton and overlooks Long Island Sound.  The Stamford Campus was established in 1952.  The Hartford Campus moved to the downtown area of the city in 2017.  The Waterbury Campus enrolls over one thousand students each year.  Including graduate programs, the university is divided into 14 schools and colleges which serve the approximately 32,182 students enrolled.  Accreditation is given to the university by the New England Commission of Higher Education (NECHE) allowing bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees to be awarded.

Applicants to the university will find it a somewhat selective process.  High school transcripts and grade point averages are considered as well as scores on college entrance exams.  The average accepted student’s score on the SAT combined Reading and Mathematics Test is about 1250 and the average ACT score about 28.  Moreover, the average high school grade point average is about 3.64.  International students seeking admittance must send scores from either the TOEFL test of English proficiency or the IELTS test.  Placement tests are given to some entering students in Mathematics and Chemistry.  Placement into English courses is determined by SAT or ACT scores.  Any student who wants to register for Pre-Calculus, Calculus I, or Calculus II must take the math placement test which is offered online.  The chemistry placement test is also offered online for students who want to enroll in Chemistry courses. 

Students can choose to study one of over one hundred majors, eight different bachelor’s degrees, seventeen different graduate degrees, and five professional programs.  The most popular major at the university currently is Psychology.  The Department of Psychological Sciences offers both undergraduate and graduate degree programs.  Other popular majors include Economics, Speech Communication, Accounting, Biology, Political Science, Human Development and Family Studies, and Nursing.  The School of Business offers undergraduate degrees in fields such as Accounting, Finance, Management, Administration, Marketing, and Information Systems among others.  Graduate programs are also available such as the full-time MBA program.  The graduate programs may require a score on the GMAT or a score on the GRE exam. Nursing is another popular program at the university.  To enroll in the Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing program as a freshman, grade point average, class rank, and SAT or ACT scores are considered.  Students must have taken Chemistry in high school.  The nursing program also offers graduate level degrees in nursing.  The NEAG School of Education offers two programs resulting in certification as an educator.  One is a five-year, combined program ending in a Bachelor of Science in education and a Master of Arts in curriculum and instruction.  The second is a Teacher Certification Program for College Graduates (TCPCG).  This full-time, one-year program earns a master’s degree and prepares graduates to teach in a specific certification field.  Certification in Connecticut requires passing both the Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators exam and the Praxis II subject area exams.
