With an overall headcount of 15,400 for the Fall of 2017, CUNY (City University of New York) serves a diverse community. Located in Bayside, Queens, New York, Queensborough Community College provides a multicultural demographic with a broad array of Associates degree and Professional Certificate programs. In addition to the institution’s accreditation through the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, some of these programs have their own individual accreditations through specialized agencies, such as the ETAC of ABET (Engineering Technology Accreditation Commission of ABET), the Accreditation Council for Collegiate Business Schools and Programs, and the National Association of Schools of Theatre.
Although the SAT and ACT are not required for admission, accepted students may be required to take the CATs (CUNY Assessment Tests) in one or more subjects (reading, writing, and mathematics). Students are able to download the Accuplacer Study app to prepare for the placement assessment. Out of the total number of freshmen matriculating in the Fall of 2017, over 50% needed to enroll in a remedial subject; 41% found it necessary to enroll in remedial math.
Out of the more than 35 programs of study offered, some may have different entrance requirements. For example, QCC CUNY’s TechWorks program requires scores from the TABE (Test of Adult Basic Education). Candidates for programs offered by the Nursing Department, in addition to being enrolled in QCC CUNY with a GPA of 3.0 or greater, must also take the National League of Nursing Pre-admission RN exam (RN PAX). Other programs may simply require students to complete specific courses. Students who wish to take advantage of the dual A.A./B.A. Liberal Arts and Sciences program offered through a partnership with Queens College, must pass a course equivalent to College Algebra with a C or better, or receive sufficiently high scores on a placement exam, in order to continue with the requisite coursework.
