What is George Mason University known for?

George Mason University is a large, public research institution in Virginia which is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.  The university offers programs leading to bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees.  In 2017, 35,960 students were enrolled in classes at the university.  The university has four campuses in the state and one in South Korea.  The Fairfax Campus and the Arlington Campus are both very close to Washington D.C.  The Science and Technology Campus is in Manassas.  The Smithsonian-Mason School of Conservation is in Front Royal and the South Korean Campus is in Songdo.  Eleven different colleges and schools comprise the university. 

The average high school GPA of students who have been admitted to the university is 3.66.  The average ACT score is 24 and the average composite SAT is 1260.  A math placement test is required.  Students for whom English is not the first language are encouraged to submit TOEFL scores.  There are certain majors or programs which have additional admissions requirements.

One of many programs at the university, the College of Education and Human Development offers undergraduate BA and BS degrees that lead to teaching credentials as well as master’s level programs in education.  Certificate programs in secondary education are available for students interested in the field who are working toward a bachelor’s degree.  Students who are seeking certification in Virginia must take the Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators Assessment as well as the Praxis Subject Assessments.  There are also state testing requirements for Reading and Literacy.  The university nursing program has traditional Bachelor of Science programs and graduate programs in nursing.  To enter the BSN program, students must achieve junior level status with a minimum GPA of 3.0 in course work that is prerequisite to nursing.  Throughout the program, students participate in coursework that prepares them to take the NCLEX-RN licensing test.  The pass rate on that test for university graduates in posted on the nursing school web page.
