Prepare for the PERT math placement test and skip remedial math.

Most sites offer math sample questions for PERT prep that are similar to the ones you’ll find on the Florida Department of Education’s website. What these types of resources lack is the math instruction behind the questions, which is exactly what’s needed to effectively prepare.

I really appreciated the math lessons on the website. I had been studying math before for the PERT math test and I just couldn't seem to pass it. I went from a 84 the first time I took to passing it with a 120. The videos were short and to the point. Thank you again!

How do I prepare for the PERT test?

1. Go slowly but surely

Start each concept by watching whiteboard videos. Then, move to guided practice with complete audio explanations. Finally, test your knowledge – but only when you’re completely confident. This “I do, we do, you do” approach is essential for anyone wondering how to pass the PERT placement test with a weak background in math.

2. Concentrate your efforts

The best PERT math test prep must be incredibly efficient as well. You want to be ready for the test but you also want to get over this hurdle as soon as possible! So, first and foremost, use direct and to-the-point instruction. Don't waste time with long-winded explanations. Secondly, your PERT test prep should only include the topics covered on the test - nothing more and nothing less. Last but not least, start every lesson with a diagnostic pre-test to see if you already know the concept. If you do, then skip the lesson. This allows you to move through the topics as quickly as possible, utilizing targeted practice questions to ensure you are fully prepared. This approach lets you concentrate your efforts effectively, enhancing your readiness for the exam.

3. Build your core

While it's great if you can breeze through a PERT test prep course, many students need to take their time, especially in the mathematics section, and even go back to the basics if necessary. For these students, it's vital to have convenient access to background lessons to build a strong foundation. This feature is particularly helpful for adults returning to school after a long absence who may have forgotten the Algebra and Geometry they learned many years ago. Identifying and strengthening weak areas in the mathematics section is crucial for older students, who often have no idea how to pass the PERT math test. The review provided by the background lessons is a true lifeline, helping them to address and improve their proficiency.

How is MathHelp different from other programs?

Not only do we use interactive multimedia to grab your attention and provide ongoing support, but we also have a dynamic grade report that tracks your progress and keeps you on task. Also, we provide a complete PERT math practice test, which you can take as many times as necessary because the questions will be different each time. In summary, consider our course a PERT study guide with everything you could need to ace the test, including the teacher!

What is the PERT exam?

The PERT, or Postsecondary Education Readiness Test, is a computer-adaptive test used by the state of Florida to determine how prepared a student is for college-level courses. All Florida high schools use the test, and many of the state's colleges and universities do as well.

How hard is the PERT test?

The PERT test can be challenging, and the math portion is often the hardest. Although it's not a pass/fail test, achieving a score of 114, considered the passing score for math, allows students to bypass remedial courses, saving time and money. Mastery of algebraic concepts, such as solving equations with two variables, is crucial for this score. Meanwhile, scores of 103 in writing and 106 in reading are needed to avoid remedial English courses. Effective preparation in these key areas is essential.

Is the PERT easier than the SAT?

The PERT is easier than the SAT, at least in terms of the math content. There have been complaints by Florida educators that the test doesn't cover the state's standards rigorously enough. However, that doesn't mean that the PERT math is easy, and it's critical to prepare for this section of the test just as thoroughly as you would prepare for the SAT math.

What score do you need to pass the PERT test?

If you're trying to figure out how to pass the PERT test, it's important to understand that the test is not a pass/fail assessment. However, you receive a score ranging from 50 to 150, determining whether you are placed into college-level courses. For example, a score of 114 or more will qualify you for college-level math, and a combination of 106 or more in Reading and 103 or more in Writing will place you into freshman English.

What happens if I fail the PERT test?

You can't fail the PERT, but there are serious repercussions to doing poorly on the test. A low score will put you into remedial courses, which is not where you want to be. These courses don't even give you credit toward your degree, so you can waste lots of time and money at the very start of your college career. Therefore, while you can't “fail” the PERT, you should be concerned about what happens if you get a low score.

Is the PERT math test hard?

The PERT math test is hard simply because many students struggle with math. While the math on the PERT is not as hard as it is on the ACT or SAT, it’s challenging enough to send most students to remedial classes unless they take the time to prepare. Scores range from 50 to 150, and a 114 or more is required to place out of remedial math.

What type of math is on the PERT test?

The math on the PERT test is primarily Algebra and Geometry. The following topics are emphasized: Evaluating Expressions, Solving Equations and Inequalities, Coordinate Planes, Systems of Equations, Polynomials, Factoring, and Quadratics.

How many questions are on the math PERT?

The math portion of the PERT has 30 questions, which is the same number of questions you’ll see on both the Reading and Writing sections of the test. The PERT test math section isn't timed, but it shouldn't take more than about 30 minutes to complete. You won't be allowed to bring a calculator to the test, but you will have access to a calculator app for some of the math questions.

Thank you so much for the help! This was the only way I passed my PERT test! I went from an 84 the first time I took to passing it with a 120.Margot Hitchcock - February 2025

It was very helpful. The format is easy to understand and the videos are straight to the point. Completely recommend if you're studying for the PERT college math placement test.Alex Tash - August 2024

My son passed the PERT and never would have been able to without Math Help. His quote: “the videos are simple and straight forward (no “big” words); if you got a question wrong on the practice you could click a button that would show you the correct steps.” Thank you for your help.Angela Showley - June 2024

Very helpful! I didn't hire any tutor for my math placement exam for college. I haven't been in school in 7 years. And I aced the PERT test from just using this subscription alone! Life saver. Thank you.Phoebe Olsen - May 2024

When I took the PERT the first time with no prep, I passed all of the sections except for that math portion, I got a 106 but needed a 114 to get into intermediate algebra. I was extremely disappointed to say the least. I tried your PERT math program and retook the test scoring a 125 on my second try!! This allows me to skip the intermediate algebra course I was trying to get into the first time and go straight to college algebra. I feel so much more confident in my overall math knowledge because of your course and I cannot thank you enough.Maria Blum - April 2024

This was a wonderful program and helped me pass the PERT test. I could not have done it without this program. Totally worth the money. Thank you!Kyndal Howard - January 2024

It was wonderful. So wonderful. It gave me a love of maths!!!! I got 115 in the pert having only completed 75% of the course. I came back and did another 10% and achieved 125. That was enough. What is the PERT Test?

The Postsecondary Education Readiness Test (PERT) is a computer adaptive test used in Florida high schools and colleges to assess student preparedness for college-level coursework. Created by McCann Associates with input from Florida educators, the PERT is divided into Mathematics, Reading, and Writing sections, each containing 25 operational items that determine placement scores and 5 field test items for ongoing test improvement. The test, which is untimed and does not allow personal calculators, offers an on-screen calculator for math questions.

After completing their PERT math test prep, students should have a full understanding of the types of math questions asked and should be thoroughly prepared to meet or exceed the college-ready cut score. Achieving this score allows high school students to engage in dual enrollment and bypass additional classes, while college students can proceed directly into credit-bearing courses. Effective preparation involves familiarizing oneself with the test format, focusing on key mathematical concepts, and utilizing available practice resources to build confidence and competence in tackling the math section.
