The ORELA (Oregon Educator Licensure Assessments) Essential Academic Skills exam is a “basic skills” test that is not required to be qualified for a teacher license in Oregon. However, teacher education programs may require a passing score on this exam as part of the admissions process. Students applying to an educator preparation program that does require the Essential Academic Skills exam will be required to pass all 3 subtests - Subtest I: Reading (001); Subtest II: Writing (002); and Subtest III: Mathematics (003). The tests are taken on the computer and all of the questions are multiple-choice with the exception of 1 written assignment on Subtest II.
The mathematics subtest requires knowledge of mathematics concepts from the categories of number properties and operations, fundamental principles of algebra, principles of measurement, geometry concepts, probability, statistics, mathematical reasoning, and problem solving.
