For example, the number 89,234 can be written as the word name eighty-nine thousand, two hundred thirty-four, or in expanded notation as 8 ten thousands + 9 thousands + 2 hundreds + 3 tens + 4 units. Students also learn to find the value of a given digit in a given number. For example, the digit 5 in the number 1,508,346 means 5 hundred thousands.
