What is West Los Angeles College known for?

West Los Angeles College, a two-year public institution which is part of the California Community Colleges System, is located in the western Baldwin Hills near Culver City.  The Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges has provided its approval to the college.  Transfer programs, associate degrees, and vocational programs are offered in a variety of fields.  A bachelor’s degree in Dental Hygiene is now offered as well.  Annually, the student enrollment reaches between 16,000 and 19,000 for all programs including full and part time students.

Anyone may apply who is over 18 years old or holds a high school diploma, California High School Proficiency Certificate, GED, or other equivalent.  Entering students attend an Orientation Session where they meet with an advisor.  For English and Math Placement, students take a five-question form online.  For students who are not native English speakers, TOEFL or IELTS exam scores are not required.  The college offers the West Language Academy to those students. 

The bachelor’s degree in Dental Hygiene is a national model program.   Admission to this program is selective and requires specific prerequisite coursework.  Additionally, it is recommended that applicants submit scores from the ATI TEAS exam.   The Nursing program offers coursework for becoming a Certified Nursing Assistant, a Certified Home Health Aide, an In-Home Supportive Services Provider, or a Medical Assistant.  The Child Development Department offers programs for students interested in education.  An Associate Degree for Transfer is available in both Early Childhood Education and Elementary Teacher Education.  For students who wish to enter the workforce upon completion of the associate degree, an Associate of Arts degree in Child Development is also offered.
