What is Syracuse University known for?

Syracuse University is a private university in New York.  The main campus is called North Campus and contains almost all the academic buildings and some dormitories.  The South Campus contains mostly residence halls.  The Downtown Campus opened in 2004 and contains the Communication, Advertising, Environmental and Interior Design, Industrial and Interactive Design, and Fashion programs.  The university is comprised of thirteen colleges and schools that offers the various graduate and undergraduate programs and is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education.  Information from the year 2017, shows the student population to have been 22,484, including 15,252 students in undergraduate courses and 7,232 students enrolled in graduate courses. 

The university requires submission of scores from college entrance tests for admission.  Also recommended is a course of study in high school that will prepare the graduate for college level courses.  As evidenced by information based on previously accepted students, the average grade point average was 3.63 and the average score on the combined reading and math SAT tests was 1255.  For the ACT test, the average score was 28.  Applicants seeking to be admitted as International Students should submit scores from an English Proficiency Exam.  The university will accept the TOEFL test or the IELTS.  Also accepted are the Pearson Test of English (PTE) and the Cambridge English Language Assessment.   Accepted students will take placement exams in Mathematics and Foreign Languages.  Additionally, the English Language Assessment Exam is given to students who are not native speakers. 

Some of the most sought-after courses of study at the university include Communication, Journalism, Social Sciences, Business, Management, Marketing, Visual and Performing Arts, and Engineering.  The Whitman School of Management offers eight undergraduate business majors, a variety of master’s in science degrees, and an MBA program.  For graduate admissions, a GMAT or GRE test score is required.  The School of Education offers bachelor’s degree programs that lead to initial teacher certification in New York.  The Career Services office assists student to prepare credentials needed for certification.
