What is Pierce College CA known for?

Pierce College is located in Los Angeles, California and is a public college that is accredited by the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges, Western Association of Schools and Colleges.  Approximately 21,000 students attended the college during the 2018-2019 academic year.  Associate degrees and certificates are awarded. 

Admission to the college is granted to anyone who has graduated from high school, has passed the California High School Proficiency Examination, or is over 18 years of age and can document the ability to benefit from the coursework.  International students should submit TOEFL or IELTS scores.  All students must participate in the assessment process.  This process places students into appropriate courses in English and Mathematics.  The placement testing is no longer required.  Placement is determined by high school transcripts, high school GPA, and grades.  Students meet with a counselor who helps determine their course placement.  The English as a second language test is still being administered in the Assessment Center. 

Over 40 different associate degree programs are offered along with over 70 certificates.  The college has a farm and farm center for agricultural programs.  The nursing program is approved by the state Board of Registered Nursing.  Graduates of the Associate Degree Nursing program are eligible to apply for a license as a registered nurse.  In order to be admitted to the program, students must earn a grade of C or better in all nursing prerequisites.  Additionally, there are proficiency requirements in Reading, Writing, and Mathematics.  The college also offers an Associate of Arts transfer degree for Elementary Education and an Associate of Science transfer degree in Early Childhood Education.  The college has transfer agreements with many of the universities in the state including CSU and UC.
