What is Moraine Valley Community College known for?

A public community college in Palos Hills, Illinois, Moraine Valley Community College is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission.  Associate degrees and certificates are awarded in many programs.  In addition to the main campus, the Moraine Valley Education Center satellite campus opened in 2004 and the Southwest Education Center opened in 2010.  Approximately 15,286 students attended classes at the college in the 2018-2019 academic year. 

The college admits any high school graduate, student who holds a GED equivalency diploma, or any adult student who demonstrates the ability to benefit from its courses and programs.  While not required, high school transcripts or GED scores (if available) should be submitted during the application process.  Students will take placement exams in Reading, Writing, and Math.  The Accuplacer Next Generation exams are used for Reading and Writing.  The ALEKS exam is administered for Math.   Exemptions from placement testing may be granted for certain ACT or SAT scores.  For students who may have difficulty with the English language, the Accuplacer IEL exam is given.  These students are not required to submit TOEFL scores. 

The college offers many transfer degree programs.  Students who are interested in earning a degree in education in order to fulfill teacher licensing requirements are encouraged to earn an associate degree and then transfer to a four-year school to complete a bachelor’s degree and teaching requirements.  Certificates and associate degrees are also awarded in the Early Childhood Education field.  The nursing program offers an Associate of Applied Science degree in Nursing.  It is a seventy-two-credit hour program.  Successful completion of the program allows a student to take the National Council Licensure Examination to become a Registered Nurse.  Students may then choose to enter the workforce or transfer to a four-year college to complete a Bachelor of Science in Nursing.  The Associate Degree Nursing program has a selective admission process that includes the requirement of scores on the ATI TEAS exam.
