What is Bunker Hill Community College known for?

Bunker Hill Community College is located in Boston, Massachusetts. The college has two campuses and three extension sites. Approximately 13,000 students are enrolled in the college making it the largest community college in the state. The Charlestown area of Boston is the site of the main campus which opened in 1973. The Chelsea Campus opened in 1987 and also serves the communities of Revere, Everett, Winthrop, and East Boston. Satellite campuses are located at South End, Malden, and East Boston. The college is accredited by the New England Association of Colleges and Schools, Inc.

The college maintains an open admission policy which enables any person with a high school diploma or equivalent (GED or HiSET) to enroll in classes. International students must provide evidence of proficiency with the English language such as TOEFL or IELTS scores. Students who do not currently have scores on one of these exams may take the ESL test in the Assessment Center. The ESL test consists of the Accuplacer WritePlacer and the LOEP Reading test. For all entering students, placement in courses is based on high school GPA, prior coursework, ACT or SAT scores, CLEP or AP scores, or the computerized placement test. Students who must take the placement test can prepare for the Accuplacer Next Generation exams – WritePlacer, Reading, Arithmetic, and Advanced Algebra and Functions.

The Division of Professional Studies offers programs in Early Childhood Education. Student who wish to teach in K-12 programs, may earn an Associate of Arts degree in education. This degree would allow transfer to a four-year school to complete a bachelor’s degree leading to certification upon passing teacher licensing exams such as Praxis or NES. The college offers an associate degree program in nursing. To enter the program, one must have passed certain specific courses such as math, chemistry and English with a grade of C or better. Additionally, a minimum score on the TEAS VI exam is required. Students who successfully complete the nursing program will take the NCLEX-RN which is a licensure exam.
