What is 6th Grade Math?
Sixth grade (or grade six in some regions, equivalent to Year 7 in England and Wales) is the sixth year of schooling and the first or second year of middle school or the last year of elementary school for students in some countries and education systems. Students are at least 11-12 years old.
In the United States, the sixth grade is the sixth school year after kindergarten. Students are usually either 11 or 12 years old, though could be younger or older, if they are promoted, (skip grades) or held back for not reaching a specific school standard.
In the United States, sixth grade has been considered the last year of elementary school or the first year of middle school in some schools. In some local school districts, it’s the last year of intermediate school. This can be seen at the local school district level, where adjacent districts can differ on what level the sixth grade occupies. Students who attend private & faith-based elementary or middle schools sometimes generally remain in grammar school for kindergarten through 8th grade, then go to high schools in 9th grade (as freshmen), the same as public local schools.
In mathematics, students learn about fractions, decimals, exponents and pre-algebra. Geometry, graphs and physics are also sometimes taught, but usually as a primer to prepare the students for future learning in the near future in high schools to begin algebra. Exponents are also generally introduced, and students learn about the properties of circles and polygons, and the measurement of angles in degrees. Pre-Algebra and Algebra I are taught in some schools, as honors courses.
